Beer #11 - Fortunate Islands / Modern Times

 Beer #11 - W/C 11 May 2015

BREWERY //

Modern Times opened in San Diego a couple of years ago as a supergroup of Californian brewers with a little help from Kickstarter. All of their recipes are listed online and the brewers positively encourage home brewers to tinker with them. So far, so Modern. The reason Modern Times caught our attention is that they make marvellous beer which is not constrained by the restrictions of a particular ‘style’. Also because they have a mural of Michael Jackson and Bubbles made from 10,900 Post-Its on the wall of their tasting room…

TASTING NOTES //

“It taste’s like wizards” - the back of the can

Jacob McKean is the founder of Modern Times and Fortunate Islands is his favourite of their beers. It is a Wheat Beer but unlike any we’ve tried before- it is dry hopped at the rate of many Double IPAs. The Citra and Amarillo hops give Fortunate Islands a huge tropical, citrusy flavour which makes for a sessionable and complex beer. The mild, nutty base gives a restrained bitterness to the hops making for a unique and delicious wheat / IPA mash-up.
