Beer #27 - W/C 31 August 2015
BREWERY //
BrewDog almost require no introduction. In 2007, finding inspiration in the American craft beer movement, Martin Dickie & James Watt decided to start brewing beer in Aberdeen which was different to pretty much anything else in Britain at the time. Dickie had some experience, having worked at Thornbridge where he helped develop the recipe for the exceptional Jaipur. Fast forward to today and BrewDog are a Worldwide phenomenon with 31 bars and more opening all the time. Their brash attitude and PR stunts (last week they were offering taxidermy donkey rides to their new Brighton bar) certainly get them a lot of press - positive and negative. More importantly than all that though is the innovative attitude they take to brewing excellent and reliable beer. Which is why Beer Jerk favourites Yeastie Boys are starting to contract brew their NZ beers at the Aberdeen brewery.
TASTING NOTES //
Bam. BrewDog describe this beer as a 'ruthless' India Pale Ale on the label. Those guys aren't especially know for understatement but in this case we think they are spot on. The body is medium and there is a caramel malt base but the aroma and the taste is completely dominated by the variety (and volume) of hop varieties used. Pine needles, grapefruit, peach, orange pith and mango are some flavours to look out for. Rating over 200 IBU (Thornbridge Jaipur is 55 IBU), Jack Hammer is a very bitter, resinous IPA which the hop-heads among us will delight in. Others maybe not so much...
