Beer #221 - W/C 20 May 2019
BREWERY // Moon Dog do not understand the meaning of 'moderation'. Their beers are created under the benevolent gaze of John Candy (in the form of a beautiful painting) and a ceiling of dodgy looking chandeliers. Brothers Josh and Jake Uljans and Karl van Buuren started Moon Dog in 2010 with a plan to brew “Really Ridiculously Fun Beer”. Their original Melbourne brewery is equidistant between Carlton United Breweries and the Duchess brothel and was originally built up bit by bit with the help of eBay. Still proudly independent, they have seen huge growth in the past few years but retain their original spirit. Their first brew kit is now used for small seasonal brews in their brewery bar while a shiny big kit next door is used for most of their beers. They are currently building a giant 1 hectare brewery (aerial photo below) accross town in Preston, Melbourne. We can't wait to visit when it opens later this year, it will incorporate a waterfall, lagoon and rainforest. Seriously.
BEER // In January we drank Moon Dog's Pine-Lime Splice and now it's time for their follow-up. A trans-Tasman cultural mash-up inspired by the iconic Australian 'Splice' ice-cream. The version with a raspberry shell debuted in 1962 and has been a hit ever since. Splice Of Heaven is icecreamified with an addition of vanilla to give it a creamy sweetness. Don't expect a sickly icecream in a glass though - this is certainly a Pale Ale with a touch of hoppy bitterness (Mosaic & Azacca hops) and a rounded cereal malt base. The biscuity malt brings to mind a cheesecake base. Huge amounts of raspberries were used in the brew which give it a gorgeous aroma and an unusual but satisfying flavour. We look forward to hearing what you think on Untappd and in the Beer Jerk Members Facebook Group.
