Beer #232 - Moon Dog & Duncan's / Splice of Whippy

Beer #232 - W/C 29 July 2019

This week we're drinking another Beer Jerk exclusive that was bottled just for us!

BREWERY // Following a 22,000 km road trip circumnavigating the USA and drinking countless beers, George Duncan & Wai Familton were inspired to start brewing. After several years of brewing fantastic beers in his kitchen and a few more years contract brewing, George opened a brewery in Paraparaumu on the beautiful Kapiti Coast with a cellar door (also staffed by George). Duncan's hypnotic labels are created by Dr. D Foothead.

Josh Uljans and Karl van Buuren started Moon Dog in 2010 with a plan to brew “Really Ridiculously Fun Beer”. Their original Melbourne brewery was built up bit by bit with the help of eBay. Still proudly independent, they have seen huge growth in the past few years but retain their original spirit. Their first brew kit is now used for small seasonal brews in their brewery bar while a shiny big kit next door is used for most of their beers. They are currently building a gigantic 1 hectare brewery across town in Preston, Melbourne. We can't wait to visit when it opens later this year, it will incorporate a waterfall, lagoon and rainforest. Seriously.
If you're heading to Beervana next weekend, you can check out some brand new releases from Duncan's and Moon Dog at their stands. See you there 🍻

BEER // A few years ago a completely different type of IPA emerged in Vermont as a counter to the bitter, resinous West Coast versions. Key to the style are the yeast strains that create more esters (fruit flavour & aroma) to give a sweeter, fuller impression. And often lots of oat and wheat is added to the malt bill for a big, round body with a smooth mouthfeel. In a nutshell, a Hazy IPA should have low bitterness, lots of body and be packed with juicy hop flavours and aroma. A recent progression to these thic haze bois has been Milkshake IPAs and Icecream IPAs which add fruit and lactose to the mix. We took Moon Dog on a tour of New Zealand a few months ago and paired them up with some of our favourite breweries. When discussing their collaboration brew with Duncan's, they quickly decided on a Strawberry Milkshake IPA. The result is surprisingly wonderful and balanced - it has a big creamy body, soft sweetness and enough strawberry to make the beer interesting, not sickly.

NOTE // This beer is bottle conditioned and has sediment. Pour gently and leave the dregs in the bottle.

We look forward to seeing your reviews, photographs and food pairings in the Beer Jerk Members Facebook Group and on Untappd!
