Beer #251 - Deep Creek & Nomad / Intrepid IPA

Beer #251 - W/C 16 December 2019

We're drinking yet another Beer Jerk member exclusive this week! The last time our mates from Nomad came to New Zealand they brewed this beer with Deep Creek. A lot of Intrepid was shipped to Australia and we bought the whole New Zealand allocation for you awesome people.

BREWERY // The New Zealand beer landscape looked pretty different back in 2011 but old school friends Paul Brown & Jarred Maclachlan had a plan for success. They chucked in their jobs and started a brewpub with hospitality expert Scott Taylor in the heartland of beer-loving British ex-pats, Auckland's Brown's Bay. After closing the pub each night at midnight, they would work through the night to brew more beer. After just a few months, they reached capacity and started looking for a dedicated off-site brewery space which is when they tempted an extremely talented brewer, Hamish Ward, to leave his day job as a genetic research scientist and head up the brewery. Their success over the past few years has been huge and they keep racking up awards. Their steady stream of seasonal releases means there's always something new to try from their brewpub, brewery taproom or anywhere else you find them.

Years ago, a triumvirate of beer experts came together in Northern Italy and made plans to open a new kind of brewery in Australia. Leonardo Di Vincenzo is the founder of Birra del Borgo (top 100 rated global brewery) and Kerrie & Johnny Latta import beers from around the world to Australia. They persuaded Brooks Carretta, Leonardo's brewing protege, to move from the mountains of Lazio to the beaches of Brookvale, Sydney. Brooks had two conditions "To never be restricted by fashions and trends and to use Australia’s amazing native ingredients". That was in early 2014 and since then we've seen beers made with Wattle Seeds, Lilly Pilly Fruit, Hibiscus Rosella and others aged in grappa barrels.

BEER // IPAs are the most popular style of craft beer by a country mile. And we can't imagine it giving up the crown anytime soon. There are many sub-categories of IPA but they are all about the hops. Deep Creek have an impressive reputation for their IPAs and Nomad love to incorporate native ingredients into brews whenever possible so Intrepid was a perfect collaboration. it was no surprise that Nomad were drawn to New Zealand's unique and delicious Kawakawa with its sweet peppery herbaceous flavours. The botanical compliments the juicy and tropical hop notes from the trio of Cascade, Motueka & Riwaka hops. This beer is in the mould of the beautifully crafted, smooth Deep Creek IPAs with a touch of biscuit malt and a unique herbal twist.

If you want to stock up on Intrepid, you can find the remaining stock in our webshop and the Fridge & Flagon. We look forward to seeing your review in our closed Beer Jerk Members Facebook group.
