Beer #382 - Moon Dog / Rosé Sour Power

Beer #382 - W/C 6 June 2022

BREWERY // Brothers Josh and Jake Uljans and Karl van Buuren started Moon Dog in 2010 with a plan to brew “Really Ridiculously Fun Beer”. Their original Melbourne brewery was built up bit by bit with the help of eBay. Still proudly independent, they have seen huge growth in the past few years but retain their original spirit. Their first brew kit is now used for small seasonal brews in their brewery bar while a shiny big kit next door is used for bigger batches. You can still visit their small OG brewpub but they now have another home across the city too. At the end of 2019 they opened a gigantic 1 hectare brewery with a lagoon, rainforest and secret tiki bar named Moon Dog World which is a must-visit destination for beer lovers.

BEER // For the most part beer drinkers and wine drinkers tend to stick to their own worlds but there's a lot we can learn from our oenophile friends and vice-versa. The popularity of rosé has grown exponentially in recent times and for good reason - it's light, fun, easy drinking but with layers of complexity. Moon Dog set about analysing the best parts of rosé and translating them into a very clever beer. The sour aspect is restrained, there's a slightly sharp bite but no more than an actual wine. The body is light, crisp and delightfully effervescent. Delicate strawberry notes make themselves known alongside whispers of watermelon and cherry with a touch of floral, tart hibiscus. Try to drink this blush beverage in between rain storms while imagining you're floating in a summertime lagoon.
